Gender – minsub

What it means to me to be a boy?

Everyone accepts that there are major dissimilarities among males and females, even if they are only bodily. Others realise not only the physical but also the social, sensitive and intelligent distinctions concerning masculine and feminine.

Because the Korean society is conservative due to confucianism, people’s thoughts still stay in conservativeness which has big differences of treatment between male and female although it’s been long time. First, arts are usually for female. If a boy does art, the olds would call the boy ‘girly’ because art is used to be performed by girls. However, in a conservativeness usually boys get benefits. In a dog-eat-dog Korean society, men would take position within the society a bit easier than women. In the same time, still, the expectations on men’s shoulders are heavier than women’s. A man who is the oldest in the entire family takes the part of the ‘head’ of the family. It’s called the ‘eldest’ and it never could be a woman. Due to this tradition, boys get heavier expectation of leading the family. There’re still some unspoken rules of gender such as men work and women hold the house. It is the basic sexist idea of conservative society. Despite the society development, we could still find this idea in my country.

It seems like the world has developed the gender equality a lot, however still, conservative sexist thoughts that cause gender inequality would be found in many societies in the world.
