How is this Sexist? – English B

According to Cambridge dictionary, sexist language is language which excludes one sex or the other, or which suggests that one sex is superior to the other. In these articles, many women, who are involved in politic, suffered due to sexist languages. Taking some specific examples from the articles of former Italian prime minister was quoted as saying that he thought rightwing women were “more beautiful” and that “the left has no taste, even when it comes to women”. http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/jun/14/top-10-sexist-moments-politics. When a politician appointed a female majority cabinet, the former prime minister mentioned that the party is too pink and some problems will occur when it comes to leading the party. Another example, a South African female politician has been teased by male politicians about her appearances. Although there was not a certain lack of her dress or appearance, a male politician argued that her dress manner for a debate didn’t show the respect just because she was fat. In addition, she was called “tea girl”, getting refused to debate by an ANC youth leader. There are so many situations that a female politician has suffered due to their outfits were not preferable to men. A female politician, who is in a high position, was called “Beauty Queen” when she was asked a question to a male politician about Parliament. She felt uncomfortable because even though she is in a significant position, her appearance was focused other than political issue in public. There are more serious sexist events that women suffered within political environment. Although it seems the women rights within the society have been promoted so far from the past, it cannot be said ‘done’. The whole world still needs to not only protect women from crimes and prejudices, but also make both of the genders are equally treated.

I AM MALALA – conclusion

How did she introduce the values, roles, ideas of patriarchy and leadership that occur in her society? What conclusions can you draw from this? This should be 300 words in length.

She showed the disadvantage of being a girl in her society, the swat valley. When she was born, people in her village commiserated and nobody congratulated. Born of a girl gets treated like a curse. People in that society don’t value female while rifles are fired in celebration of a son. The article has brought up that their role in life is simply preparing food and giving birth to children. Malala’s description of her father shows the complexity of people in her swat valley. When she was born, her father tried to break the tradition, asking his friends to throw dried fruits, sweets and coins into his daughter’s cradle, something they usually do for sons. Also, despite of father, who was a religious scholar and village cleric, said it is a bad name, he gave his daughter a name Malala, which is influenced by Malalai of Maiwand, the greatest heroine of Afghanistan. As we could see, the tradition of ideas of patriarchy is deeply constructed within the people in Malala’s society.

Gender – minsub

What it means to me to be a boy?

Everyone accepts that there are major dissimilarities among males and females, even if they are only bodily. Others realise not only the physical but also the social, sensitive and intelligent distinctions concerning masculine and feminine.

Because the Korean society is conservative due to confucianism, people’s thoughts still stay in conservativeness which has big differences of treatment between male and female although it’s been long time. First, arts are usually for female. If a boy does art, the olds would call the boy ‘girly’ because art is used to be performed by girls. However, in a conservativeness usually boys get benefits. In a dog-eat-dog Korean society, men would take position within the society a bit easier than women. In the same time, still, the expectations on men’s shoulders are heavier than women’s. A man who is the oldest in the entire family takes the part of the ‘head’ of the family. It’s called the ‘eldest’ and it never could be a woman. Due to this tradition, boys get heavier expectation of leading the family. There’re still some unspoken rules of gender such as men work and women hold the house. It is the basic sexist idea of conservative society. Despite the society development, we could still find this idea in my country.

It seems like the world has developed the gender equality a lot, however still, conservative sexist thoughts that cause gender inequality would be found in many societies in the world.

English reflection – Identity

For my personality, values and culture are the most significant parts. Values represent what I ultimately desire or believe, referring my personality clearly. The most important values of mine are physical strength and appearance, being educated, traveling, money, music and art. When all of those values are gathered, my personal identity will be completed. As with the values, culture takes the most significant part of myself. Culture basically represents the atmosphere that a person has been living on. The atmosphere, culture, gives huge effect on one’s personal identity. It constructs one’s perspective, values, and beliefs as well. Due to these reasons, values and culture are the most important parts of my personal identity.

I would argue that language is the most unique element of Korea. Language of Korea, Hangul has been selected as a world heritage of UNESCO. None of other languages have done this before. The uniquenesses of this language is that it is invented and easy. Caused by this easy language, Korea has the lowest illiteracy rate in the world. This gives Korea a special identity.

By learning this unit, I’ve learnt about variety of values and differences of other countries’ national identity.

WHO AM I BLOG POST minsub

I’m Minsub Lee, a Korean. I’m a high school senior student. Both of my parents are Koreans. I’m 100% Korean. Presently, I am living in Jakarta, Indonesia. It has been a year and a half since I’ve been here. My father’s company appointed him to work here in Indonesia for four years. I go to an international school named AIS or the Australian Independent School, in Jakarta. I’m taking the IB diploma course.

I look so Korean. Everyone says that. I’m pretty ugly though. I have small eyes on a huge head. Although, I don’t look attractive, my face is unforgettable. I have a chin which is really remarkable. Apparently my chin makes me different from others. In addition, one of my eyes looks different from the other. Only my left eye has a double eyelid. My canines are really really sharp. They look like vampire’s teeth. My positive and negative attributes are quite complicated. I personally think I am loyal. So that loyalty is one of my greatest values. Also, I’m a rational person. I’ve never lost my reason. Actually, I’ve never fought with anybody. It proves that I’m really calm and rational. I’m really polite. I like to take risks. It could be either sacrificing or adventure. Also, I always desire to be perfect. Sometimes it could be negative thing though. Desiring perfect takes a long time. Therefore, I usually take a longer time than others to complete my work. I have high emotional intelligence. However, that doesn’t mean that I have high sensibility. Controlling my emotions and understanding others are easy for me. Sensibility is the one that I don’t have enough of. This means, even though I understand a person, it is still difficult for me to sympathise with the person for me. I study math SL, physics HL, English B HL, Korean literature SL, art HL and history SL. Since I’m doing the IB diploma course, all of my subjects are not easy. History is especially hard. The wall of language is still too high for me to understand perfectly about what I learn in history class. Math was also one of the problems. HL math required me to spend my life on it . However, I don’t have enough time to complete all of the work. It is because of Art. I do not only in the school but also in academy. So I moved to SL math. Korean literature makes me regret being Korean. Reading over 100 pages and analysing is the homework that the teacher loves giving us. Therefore, basically, school tires me ruthlessly. I joined Art club CCA, Futsal CCA, concert band CCA and touch rugby CCA. CAS project of my CAS team is ‘refugee camp’. I’m scared of writing essays or project power point for CAS it’s like a major presentation EEEKKK. First of all, I like sports although I’m bad at it. Running and snowboarding are my favorite activities. I literally love snowboarding. I’m really looking forward to going on the ski trip to Switzerland in April this year. I also love fashion, money and art. Fashion is about appearance which is one of my greatest values. Most of us love money and so do I. Money can build me up. Also in the modern society, money is the most important object in getting you something or somewhere. ‘Arts’ is drawing, painting and music. Designing will be my job so eventually art is a really big part of my life. I just enjoy music. I can play two instruments, piano and trombone and I’m good at them. Arts, sports, faith, rationality, Korea, sacrificing, ugly but magnetic appearance make my identity. It has been changing and it will change in the future. Thank y’all for watching.

Values Auction- English B

Reflect on the process we have been through in exploring values.  What things do you value that others don’t? Why do you value these? What things didn’t you know you valued? After the auction were you surprised at some of the things some students valued? Were boys and girls different? How? What were some things you wanted to buy and couldn’t? What were things you think your parents valued and you valued as well? What have you learnt about values from this process?

In the English class, we played auction. Each of us were given 1000$. What we had to buy were values. What I valued were ‘looking good’, ‘being strong’, ‘getting educated’, ‘never getting mixed up with drugs’, ‘avoiding sexually transmitted diseases’, and ‘traveling around the world’. It seems like I value personal worth. ‘Looking good’ and ‘being strong and educated’ make a person better. I always desire to be a better person so that these values are apparently worth for me. ‘Never getting mixed up with drugs’, and ‘avoiding sexually transmitted diseases’ are the values which keep myself in safe. Most people would not want to be in a bad condition. ‘Traveling around the world’, which is really beautiful dream, is my wish. Most people might wish to traveling around and see the world. Values which community related are not valuable for me such as ‘feeling safe in a community’. I was surprised when one of my friend bought ‘living according to my religious beliefs’. That friend might consider his religion really valuable and important. Surprisingly, what boys valued and girls valued were different. Most of boys competed to get the value ‘being strong and muscular’, which the price went to 1000$. It is because that most of men desire muscle which is the men’s pride since humans started to hunt. Girls wanted the value ‘having a child when I’m old enough to support one’. Normally, moms pay more attention than fathers do especially in Asia. Therefore women naturally and eventually expect their children to be able to support them. The one that people competed most was ‘traveling around the world’. Apparently most of the students involved the competition to get that value. Experiencing new thing that you’ve never known before, which is traveling, caused my curiosity, may be one of the basic wants for most of humans. Once I’m a boy, I wanted to get ‘being physically strong and muscular’ and ‘traveling around the world’, however I couldn’t buy them. Both of the values were sold for 1000$ and it was after I spent some money for ‘looking good’. Surprisingly, my parents value among the values that I bought. It’s ‘getting my high school diploma’. Of course, most parents wish their children to get great score from school and my parents also do so. ‘Finding work that I really like’ was the other one that parents chose although I don’t value. What I’ve learnt from this auction activity is that ‘values’ are slightly different for each person although there were some similarities between the same gender, culture or age.
